History- Nestled in the shadow of the State Capitol is this beautifully restored historic carriage house. The restaurant is located on the corner of First and Cook Street. A local developer B.D. Hunter did the remodel in the early eighties to reflect a Victorian street scene. The establishment is buried in the heart of Springfield in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood.
Vinegar Hill got its name from the Vinegar Works located in the area of Spring and Cook Streets sometime during the early 1860’s. The fact that these structures still exist are the result of endless efforts to keep them updated and occupied with caring tenants. The structures at Vinegar Hill have a great history as well. This area originally housed a huge laundry company that was once considered state of the art and was said to be the second biggest laundry company in the state. 620 South First Street was then the stable house for the company, holding 25 head of horses used to pull the laundry carts on their weekly routes throughout the city.
The company was known as the Chapman Edwards Laundry and employed over 300 people in its day. Newspaper articles referred to Chapman Edwards Laundry as the pioneer of industry at Vinegar Hill. Some specialty services included detachable collars washed for 02 cents, as well as cleaned and starched dress shirts for 12 cents. You could even get your wool blankets washed in coconut soap for 35 cents. They consequently called it quits in the early 1950’s due to the economy and the invention and mass marketing of in-home washing machines.
The restaurant was wildly popular in the eighties known as Baur’s Steakhouse. It was a popular hideout for legislators and Springfield’s elite. The building has a beautiful mural on the South West side done by the popular artist Michael Mayowsky. There is a complete separation from the upstairs banquet suite area and the downstairs restaurant. This would offer the new owner the opportunity to use this property for multiple purposes. This is truly a property that needs to be viewed in person.
There is a 10% Buyers Premium on all purchases.
